UNSAFE MERCURY DEMANDS ACTION

  • Share our video of the destruction or a photo, we’ll post some you can copy and paste
  • Tag the Premier @FordNation, Tag the Mayor @SutcliffeOttawa
  • Text (1-647-612-3673) or Email (premier@ontario.ca) Premier Ford a short message along with a photo of the muddy mess and tell him your concerns about inaccurate and incomplete environmental site assessments, mercury levels reported above MECP safe standards, and the risk of mercury becoming mobile through the air or water from soil disturbance.  Try this one…. Dear Premier, an MZO to stop this development would protect our health, our water, and the long-term safety of our community.  Please help today.

YOU ASK, WE DO OUR BEST TO ANSWER…

Our canvassers have been feeding back questions they’ve been hearing at the door.  Here’s what we’ve received…

Q1 THEY’VE ALREADY DUG UP PART OF THE FORMER GOLF COURSE.  IS THE FIGHT OVER?

No, as we’ve said before, preliminary work and site testing does not mean the fight is over.   This development is subject to major outstanding environmental conditions and approvals (185 at this point). The City, our MPP and MP, the NCC, Kanata North Tech Park leaders, as well as local environmental and conservation groups remain firmly opposed.  The Mayor has consistently said his goal is “to achieve a permanent and lasting solution,” and we know from almost daily contact, that Coun. Cathy Curry has been working tirelessly on our issue.

Q2 HAS THE LAND BEEN SOLD FROM CLUBLINK TO MINTO?

As far as we know, the sale has not fully closed.  This may be due to outstanding conditions or approvals needed before the transfer is finalized.

Q3 THE CITY IS DENYING ACCESS TO EASEMENTS.  WHAT DOES THAT ACTUALLY MEAN AND WHAT IMPACT WILL IT HAVE?

This creates major obstacles for the developers.  This is especially important because draft subdivision approval from the OLT does not automatically give a developer rights over City land.  Potential impacts to the developer include: inability to finalize subdivision conditions, delays in obtaining approvals, redesign costs, inability to install or connect to infrastructure, reduced development yield, increased engineering complexity, and financing complications.

Q4 I LIVE A FEW STREETS AWAY FROM THE GOLF COURSE.  WOULD DEVELOPMENT IMPACT ME?

Yes, all residents near the site should be concerned about potential flooding, damage from blasting, and risks associated with possible contamination.  Other impacts include years of noise and vibrations from blasting and excavation, traffic congestion, increased pressure on schools and local infrastructure, and impacts on property value.  While flooding concerns extend to homes throughout the Kanat Lakes and Beaverbrook neighbourhoods, there is particular concern for Beaverbrook that sits metres below the golf course lands, and homes close to the Beaver Pond and downstream stormwater system infrastructure.

Q5  ARE THE RALLIES, LETTERS AND ONLINE CAMPAIGN HAVING ANY IMPACT?

Yes, our strong community advocacy is having an impact.  Our issue has remained in the spotlight for 7 years because we’ve refused to stay silent.  Rallies, letters, media attention, lobbying efforts, environmental scrutiny, and online campaigns have helped keep political pressure on decision-makers, generated public awareness, and pushed independent reviews of environmental concerns and additional testing.  Most importantly, the Premier and Mayor are finally discussing our issue.

Q6 IF WE WIN WILL IT BE A GOLF COURSE?

It is very unlikely the site would return to being an active golf course.  We’ve been focused on saving Our Kanata Greenspace.  The land we were promised in the 40% Agreement that was to be accessible to the community.  A more realistic and lasting outcome would be ensuring the land is protected as permanent public urban greenspace. This would preserve its stormwater function, ecological value, and community benefit in a way that reflects long-term public interest.

Q7 WHY AREN’T WE PROTESTING OUTSIDE A MINTO OFFICE?

Our focus has been on the government decision-makers and approval bodies that have the power to influence the outcome of this file — including the City, the Province, and the Ontario Land Tribunal.  We’ve tried to keep the movement focused, respectful, and community-driven while advocating for the protection of greenspace and responsible planning. As the situation evolves, the community rally organizers have assured us, they are discussing all advocacy options.

Q8 HOW CAN UNELECTED PART-TIME APPOINTEES THAT CAN’T BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AT THE OLT APPROVE THE DRAFT PLAN?

We know many residents feel there is a serious lack of democratic accountability regarding our issue.  People are increasingly asking whether the OLT needs major reform to restore local decision-making authority.  We believe decisions with long-term consequences for neighbourhoods, greenspace, stormwater management and local infrastructure should be made by the cities/communities directly affected.

Q9 EVERYONE SHOULD BE SUING TOGETHER.  WHY AREN’T WE?

This is something that is up to individual homeowners and is not possible until damages have occurred.  At that point, it will be up to residents or groups of residents to determine whether to take legal action.

Q10 WE’VE HEARD A LOT ABOUT CONTAMINATION IN THE SOIL. WHAT ABOUT RADON?  WHY ISN’T IT AN ISSUE GIVEN THE HIGH LEVELS IN THIS AREA?

The KGPC put information about radon in front of our supporters in a 2020 eNews issue.  Recent research has turned up little new.   Radon becomes dangerous only when trapped and concentrated, typically inside a basement or the lower levels of a building.  Studies have shown that natural ventilation alone keeps radon levels at or near normal in the deepest portions of stone quarries and even when granite is disturbed during construction or blasting, the radon gas released is immediately diluted by open air.  And so, it seems your greatest risk from radon is natural granite/uranium seepage from the soil beneath your own house through foundation cracks.   Home testing for radon risk still requires long-term air tests (90+ days).  New monitoring systems are available for your home.
