Who would have thought that 2025 would start like this?
One quite unfathomable decision regarding the 40% Agreement by the Ontario Court of Appeal (ONCA) in January has been followed by the even more inexplicable and disrespectful rhetoric blowing north from Washington. And none of it is to be laughed at. The country, all of us, have some real decisions to make in the coming weeks as we choose our political leadership and set our national economic direction for the next few years…and beyond.
But here in Kanata North, we know a little bit about a fight and how to hang tough. We’re six years in on the battle of our lives… the fight to protect our community’s safety and greenspace from the unwanted, unsafe and unnecessary development proposal by ClubLink, Minto and Richcraft. For sure, the scale is smaller, but it doesn’t make it less important. Yesterday, we had the latest update on the fight.
City files Application to the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC)
As Mayor Mark Sutcliffe announced at the KGPC Townhall on February 4. the city made the decision to pursue the ONCA decision of January to the SCC. They filed their application yesterday and we have the most important documents posted on our website – Memorandum for Argument and the Book of Authorities that they refer to.
In response to this application, there is an opportunity for the Kanata Greenspace Protection Coalition (KGPC) to comment as an Intervener. We have 30 days to make that submission. Of course, ClubLink has an opportunity to respond as well. We will get future submissions to you as they are filed.
Be reminded that this is a multi-stage process. The SCC is expected to decide whether it will grant the City’s application in the next 6 months or so. With the SCC granting less than 10% of applications for leave to appeal, it is an uphill climb to be sure. Nonetheless, we are pleased that the city deems it a step worth taking. If granted, a calendar date will be scheduled most probably well into 2026.
And that pretty much wraps up what is new for us. Given the cold temperatures and all the nastiness in the air, it is hard to believe Spring is here. Work hard to put some spring in your step! Remember, that the tough stuff is worth fighting hard for. And the KGPC is fighting tough for you. If you have a chance, help us out. We’ll all feel better!
We’re better when we stay together!
Elbows up Kanata!
