eNews – Municipal Election Done and Now Greenspace Rocks

We are very pleased that the voters of Ward 4 – Kanata North have decided that Cathy Curry is the best of the best to continue to represent us in what is clearly the largest concern in the riding- protecting our greenspace and in doing so our environment and ourselves against climate change.

Kanata North has picked a WINNER in Councillor Cathy Curry!

Cathy Curry has proven herself to be a rock-solid partner to the Kanata Greenspace Protection Coalition (KGPC) over the past 11 months.  We are very pleased that the voters of Ward 4 – Kanata North have decided that she is the best of the best to continue to represent us in what is clearly the largest concern in the riding- protecting our greenspace and in doing so our environment and ourselves against climate change.

As we mentioned in our election issue a month or so ago, this was an election sure to produce change.   We have a Council with almost 50% new faces, new views and new priorities.   It is great to be able to say we know many of them from their past activities in their communities ( Marty Carr and Sean Devine for example were past presidents of the Alta Vista and Trend-Arlington Community Associations respectively)   It is also encouraging to see how many have been promoters of the environment whether it be urban greenspace protection or tree canopy targets in their election agendas.  We hope this broadens the dialogue and policy coming out of Ottawa City Hall.   We are working on plans with other community-based organizations ( CAFES, FCA ) to meet with the new Councillors as they settle into their new roles to ensure they have a good understanding of our issue among all of the other issues at play in our city.

Mayor-Elect Mark Sutcliffe is a committed supporter too!

Certainly, there were a lot of candidates also promoting a change for Ottawa from the Mayor’s seat.  We were thrilled that the environment rose to the top of the Mayoralty discussions and pleased that all major candidates are behind the City and your  KGPC in opposition to the ClubLink development.   Beyond support for our cause,  in Mayor-elect Sutcliffe, there is the notable promise of a Mayor’s Roundtable on the Environment.   We hope that focusing a climate lens via the Roundtable on climate change and environmental policy will help prioritize the issues of trees and urban greenspace among others and promote the changes we need.

Everyday we can all win!  The environment, our greenspace and your wallet!
