Opinion in the Ottawa Citizen

“I don’t understand why it’s so hard in this town for citizens to defend green spaces from developers. Exactly why are home builders so influential and powerful in Ottawa?” ~ Brigitte Pellerin, Ottawa writer

It was one of the most endearing things about early-morning bike rides along the Pinecrest Creek pathway. Bunnies munching and birds singing. But now all you see at Iris Street and the Transitway is a sad, awful gash where majestic trees used to be. Bunnies and birds have been evicted, their homes turned into scraggly earth, sacrificed on the altar of transit progress. Tough but necessary, or so we think. Very much unlike proposals to pave over golf courses in Barrhaven and Kanata to build yet more homes. I never thought of myself as a Lorax, but someone’s got to stand up for the trees.
