eNews – Some Guidance on LPAT

As we told you last week, the KGPC intends to seek Party status at the LPAT Case Management Conference (CMC) on October 9 and both ClubLink and the City are now aware of this. The September 30 deadline imposed by LPAT for written submissions is coming up next week and we have received lots of calls from residents who are unsure of their best action.   During the week, we have had a chance to consult with our planner Dennis Jacobs from Momentum Planning  and Sylvain Rouleau from WeirFoulds, the lawyer representing us at LPAT.

The Backyard Dinner with the Dueling Pianos successfully raised over $23,500!

The Brookstreet Hotel did a spectacular job with the food and drink and the Dueling Pianos pulled out all the stops for a great evening of ‘al fresco’ dining.   The weather Tuesday night made it very enjoyable to visit with family and ‘bubble’ friends outside in the Tent.   The heaters helped a bit too!   The music was fantastic… a lot of dancing in your chair going on!

We are very pleased to announce that our event raised over $23,500 in support of the KGPC and we are grateful to those who came out and supported us  with almost 90 tickets sold.  We appreciate the many who could not join us but supported the cause by donating  more than $4700 in lieu of ticket purchases.   Thank you for that generous support!

This was our first effort at a ‘hybrid’ event, a live event mixed with an online viewing component.  We plan to continue to use these technologies to ensure we can connect with you over the next months.

Thank you again to Nyle Kelly, General Manager of The Brookstreet and its wonderful staff for all of the support they provided for this event.  We could not have done it without them.

Our Event and Fundraising team are working on some other event ideas for the cooler weather and we will get back to you soon.

To write LPAT or not to write?  A view from our lawyer.

As we told you last week, the KGPC intends to seek Party status at the LPAT Case Management Conference (CMC) on October 9 and both ClubLink and the City are now aware of this.  It seems they were expecting it in fact.  That’s a good thing!

Here is the perspective from our legal expert –

“In our opinion, unless there is a particular skillset that would lend itself to someone acting as a participant…  it is really a question of whether it (is) better put in as expert evidence. The reality is that if it is an issue that is sufficiently important to raise, it warrants an expert opinion.   The Tribunal will always listen to participants, but will expect that (the) Coalition would have an expert testify if the issue is of sufficient importance or concern.”

Mr. Rouleau also noted that the Coalition may better achieve Party status at the Tribunal if it is clear that we represent the views of the community as a whole.  That impression could be diluted if there are large numbers of individual participant statements.   Possibly more  problems might arise, he suggests,  if those statements were to conflict with our expert commentary.  He reminded us that our success is better assured if we continue to speak as a unified community. We hope this feedback helps those trying to decide whether or not to actively participate.   The Coalition is determined to ensure you and our community get quality, expert representation at LPAT and will find the best people to be your voice.  Consider instead, making a donation to our MAD Campaign to  offset our planning, legal and expert costs at LAPT.   That way, we all win!
